Importance of Oral Hygiene

Importance of Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene ensures that plaque does not buildup, causing tooth decay or gum infection. However, oral hygiene is also crucial to the overall health and well-being of an individual. It is recommended that you brush your teeth every single day and floss them regularly so that your mouth is free from infection.

Here is why oral hygiene is important:

1.   It is Crucial to Your Overall Health

Did you know that your mouth can affect internal parts of your body? The mouth is usually used to detect early diseases, such as diabetes. When an individual suffers from a mouth lesion or gum infection too often, it is often linked to diabetes.

According to some research from Harvard, those with periodontal disease have a higher chance of getting heart disease. The periodontal disease makes the body more vulnerable to inflammation. Chronic inflammation, especially in the arteries, becomes more likely.

Poor oral hygiene can also cause:

  • Bacterial pneumonia
  • Infective endocarditis
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Low birth weight
  • Cancer
  • Sepsis

2.   Tooth Loss Can Be Prevented

Many children and adults undergo tooth loss, making it one of the most common dental problems. Tooth loss is caused by poor hygiene. When there is a buildup of plaque, tooth decay can be caused, or infection can start to form in the mouth. If not detected early, this can lead to tooth loss.

To ensure that plaque does not buildup, it is important to brush and floss every day. However, this is not enough. You must also pay your dentist routinely visits and schedule yourself for professional cleaning twice a year. This ensures that even those hard-to-reach areas of the teeth are kept tartar and plaque-free.

3.   You Can Create a Dental Plan

Your oral health is different from that of your brother’s or your friend’s. One person’s dental plan cannot be the same as another’s. This is because dental conditions and mouth structures are different for everyone. These can only be detected if you go to the dentist every few months. Once the dentist figures out your oral health, he will be able to create a unique dental plan for you.

Whether it is tooth decay or teeth misalignment that you are struggling with, your dentist can create an oral care plan for you. This will ensure oral hygiene while ensuring that you feel confident.

4.   You Will Feel Confident

Who does not feel confident when wearing a beautiful smile? Taking care of your oral hygiene means that you can flash those pearly whites without ever feeling conscious.

However, practicing good oral hygiene also means that you stick to a healthy diet and avoid eating candy and sweets. Moreover, you should not smoke as this can cause mouth cancer. Try to chew sugarless gum and brush your teeth twice a day. When playing contact sports, wear a mouth guard to lower the risk of mouth injury.
